Usually if you hit back on your keyboard quick enough, it'll cache it back. Though, usually links will not work within a certain radius of the alert thingy.

I wish I could see a fairy. It's taking a while. But, I'ma be patient! I hope I'm lucky to get one of the newer ones!

They are supposed to pop up in the middle of the screen, and even if you scroll down, they will scroll along the page. The image is also rather huge. Impossible to miss.
To answer the other question that keep s popping up here: Yes, the old fairy items are still available, and always will.
