If you mean releasing the wild knuffel, is that feature even available yet? 
Well, regardless, in my opinion, at least for the wild knuffel it's not like you feel you have to dig with them (because you can't anyway), so I feel like you should just keep them, and not feed/play with them unless you have time after feeding/playing with your digging knuffel.

Yes, you can release now, but as Lan said: you can just keep them and skip feeding them when you don't have time for it.

I think I'll be making two knuffels before the Magpie. =3
I'm going to go add Neon Manta Ray to the list! =3
