I considered a library for books I wasn't sure I want to buy. but it's a bit tricky here. if I'm interested in English books, all that a library can offer me are German translations. which is now bad, by no means, I need to practice both languages. German just takes much longer and I'm discouraged by all the stuff I can't understand XD

Does your library do the thing where it is connected to a bunch of other libraries and you can ask for an English-language version of the book to be sent to your library from another, larger one, which would have it?

to be honest, I've never asked. I know a huge non-fiction library in another city does, so I can assume the small library in my town does too. but it's just an assumption. I have to check that. thanks for the idea!

though maybe I should stop running away from literature in German and embrace the translations, lol

Well, I always like reading books in the language they were first written in, if possible.
So maybe read the English-literature books in English, and the German-literature books auf Deutsch.

yep, that's what I'm trying to do. unsurprisingly the list of stuff read in German and the list of stuff read in English are disproportionate XD
which is why I was sad when there were only translations in our local library. but maybe you're right and they can order native language stuff too. that would be great. there are quite a few fantasy series I'd like to catch up on

Yes, worth a shot! My library does it! The library closest to me is fairly small, but there are 15 or so libraries in my county, and they're all connected. So you can get on their website and browse all the books in the county, then you can put them on hold and even tell them to ship them to your preferred library for pickup for free.

Hehe, yes, I use that feature a lot in the spring and summer! (I don't in the winter because I hate returning things late, but there is too much snow here to commit to returning things on time). The website even tells me when the book is being sent to my library and when it arrives, and then it gives me a week to come get it. :qh:
