Actually sense of smell is incapable of waking people up <.< That's why people can die sleeping through a fire even though they are breathing in all that smoke. They catch arsonists sometimes when they ask people how they woke up in time to escape the fire and they say "I woke up because I smelled smoke".

Wasabi powder might burn when it gets in your nose though. That would certainly wake you up xDD

Last I was told, the smoke thing was cuz there's some sort of reaction that deepens sleep when you smell it, so it very well could depend on what it is

Hmm, I was reading about the study they did, and they didn't just test the smell of smoke. They used pyridine, which is one of the very strong things you will smell in a fire, but they also used strong peppermint, and neither did anything unless the person was still in the process of falling asleep rather than already being asleep. Meanwhile a humming sound always woke the people up whether they were just falling asleep or out cold.

EDIT: Whoops, just a moderately loud sound in general. Not sure where I got "humming sound" from. Not that it makes much difference, but better to state things accurately xD

Either way I hope I'm not in a fire so I dont have to worry about such nonsense because people still can't figure crap out
I've never found peppermint to be very strong, either
