Woah, 3000/5000 to go for the muse.. 
I used to animate stuffs back then..
I used Adobe Photoshop: Image Ready..

I use Photoshop to make gif animations sometimes. I'm not that good because I can't really draw, so I always use existing images. But here's just a little example of something I did with evolving items:
I know it's really not anything impressive, but Photoshop is pretty good for making simple gif animations

I have it but can't open it because I get the lovely "Elmo" error message.

The "Great Elmo" is a cracker who produces a lot of the cracks and exploits for adobe products..
