One of my favorite books for years was "Tea With The Black Dragon", by R. A. MacAvoy. (It is set contemporary to when it was written, but I guess that was long enough ago now I can't quite get away with calling it "modern"? Except they ride airplanes and if air travel isn't modern what is?! Bless it, I'm calling it modern! It's certainly within living memory, even if not mine personally! That COUNTS!) Er. Anyhow. It's not exactly fantasy dragon style, but I loved it. It made me look at every stranger I met and peer closely at their hands because maybe they were Secretly A Dragon.
