I don't think you have to update your game. All the coding had been done in previous updates. All Niantic needed to do was flip the switch on their end.
I'm going to try and get a Pikachu tomorrow when we're out hunting.

Hopefully this means they've upped the chances of a Pikachu actually showing up. . . I'd like a Raichu sometime before the year 2020.
