I spend a crazy amount of time trying to do digital workarounds for my family elders, which is frustrating because I'm not a techie myself either, it's just that compared to them.... at least I know that a hard drive can mean more than just an off-road camping trip.

I used to not have a cellphone but lately I've been thinking about caving, because ever since they changed the landlines so it's hooked up to the internet instead of on a separate system, it has been giving me fits. And if the landline doesn't work and there's an emergency, how exactly am I going to know?

But I really, really, really don't want to.
There are far too many people who would view it as an everyday tool instead of 'emergencies ONLY'.
And then there are the ones who genuinely think everyday things are emergencies.
Landlines are super helpful for them because it goes to an answering machine automatically, first (doesn't even ring, just goes straight to answering machine). Then if I'm home and it's actually an emergency I can pick up, but if it's someone being ridiculous I can pretend I'm not home until they calm down because, no, your neighbor telling you her daughter can't take her to the hairdresser after all is *not* an emergency, not even for her, and definitely not for you, and certainly not for me.

I can't tell what's going on with them.

Did they truly live such sheltered lives that they view every little setback as a terrible calamity? Or are they just oddly overdramatic and fall prey to emotions too easily?

Well, depending on the emergency there's a chance both Internet and phone reception will be out. But I agree that you're never too prepared and that a cellphone could be of good use.
Like, it's the reason why I annoyed the husband to give me his work phone number, because I know in the event of an emergency where reception will be bad his phone at least is on a priority line so we can contact each other.
Because, well, I live in a country with lots of earthquakes, a few volcanoes and typhoons and fun stuff.

As for the sheltered people, some people are just like that. A small change in plans is enough to send them over the edge. My mom can be like that too and it can be exhausting. Especially when I actually need to tell her important things.

Yeah... you bring up some good points.

(Fried rice is delicious. I made a savory pudding for dinner, but with noodles instead of bread because that's what I had on hand. There's bread dough ready to rise overnight for tomorrow now too)

You leave the dough to rise overnight and bake the bread in the morning?

I don't have any time in the morning, I would like to make my dough in the evening and bake next afternoon, but I never managed to work out the rise-in-the-fridge methods.

I really like sourdough, so I tend to go for the ones with longer rise times.

And it depends on the morning; weekend mornings are doable. Workday mornings are not!

I tried sourdough years ago, but now my schedules are strange and I don't bake bread regulary so it's not worth keeping a sourdough.

All my mornings are full now. And half my afternoons, tbh XD
And I can buy great bread here where I live now, so I'm not so motivated to bake as I used to be.

Yes, that's a big factor -here the only kind of bread you can really get is the cheap stuff that's more air than bread.
Not really my thing.
I want bread I can actually do stuff with, and which makes me feel satisfied and full.

Not air-filled playdough.
