If you're using stale bread you don't need to toast it...

As far as I can see, it only does 2 things:
1) Help the bread keep its structure and texture (especially important if you are using the cheaper softer breads)
2) Soaks up more of the egg/milk mixture (because you dried it out first, it can hold more) -that makes it richer and more protein per slice.

If it does anything else, I can't tell!

I'm on the stale-bread team! :D
Plus some smaller regional differences, so it be something like this:
Akili Li wrote: 1) toast the bread use stale bread
2) in a bowl whisk eggs, milk, and nutmeg
3) pour egg mix into a shallow pan
4) put toast into egg mix until both sides are coated
5) fry the french toast in a pan with generous amounts of butter oil
6) serve with lemon curd and a sprinkling of vanilla sugar sprinkle sugar and cinnamon

But yeah, those are good ol' leftover recipes. Bread pudding too.
I think anyone who wants to cook should learn leftover recipes, cause you eventually will have leftovers and throwing away perfectly good food is mean :mcmeh:

Yeah, apart from the egg, i don’t really do much after. I might put some jam or honey on top though. And i don’t use butter either lol. XD

I very rarely have stale bread though.
I don't remember the last time I make french toast...

Same here lol. Not the stale bread, I’m sure we’ve gotten stale bread though. Just the making of the French toast. XD and we rarely get like square bread, our bread is like….oval-ish? XD;; not very toast-sized shape. XD

But you can make it any shape!
I've never use square-bread, because bread typically is not like that here.

Actually I think that square French toasts would look kinda weird ^^;

I know but I’ve always seen French toast as squarish…xD or bread-shaped ish. Not….the weird ovalish shape that my bread is lol. XD

Wait, square french bread?
So... if you cut the edges off?
But, why cut the edge off?

I'm confused.

Also why is toast any particular shape? It's whatever shape you cut your bread in. I guess if you wanted to, you could use some cookie cutters on your bread before you toasted it, and have some truly uniquely shaped toast....

Well now I have to try that the next time my nephew visits. He's 7, he'd probably be amused.
