If you plant the seeds before the end of the event (ie if you're able to plant them) the event will continue long enough for them to be harvested.
The event starts today and runs until April 22nd. The Spring Soil page will stay available till the 27th so you can harvest plants you planted on the last day, though no more seeds will be given (neither free nor for food) after the 23th! If you have left-over seeds after the 22nd, you will not be able to grow them into full plants.
