The lore explains the form difference, though. As for the colors, well...I'm not sure. My first thought is when car oil spills on a driveway. Sometimes you get some really shiny rainbow colors. ^^
But that's a bit of a stretch.
When I first saw the Alolan grimer, I thought it grew a funny beard.
