Oh, yes, they are!
That's why I looked for a very young pup (we are waiting until he's weaned) because that's apparently easier.

And even so I'll have to use a method called "split cage", which basically means putting hardwire mesh in the middle of the cage to make sure they can't fight.
And changing sides every few hours so they get used to each other. Only after they get used to living together you may remove the mesh.

The difference with hamsters is that hamsters are ok being on their own, and interacting only with humans. Apparently it's better having only one.
Gerbils on the other hand enjoy having company of other gerbils, and human interaction does not suffice.

...

I'm already ranting :mclaugh:

Ricky is adorable. :)
Do gerbils have a lot of color variation or are they mostly all in the same range of hues?

I am getting another boy, of course!
I don't want breeding, rodents are super-breeders and it can get out of hand very easily.

Gerbils do have some kind of color variation.

They can be brownish, black, or whiteish. Eyes may be black or red.
And there are mixtures of those colors, of course.

Oooh, those are some really cute options!

Where are you going to find your second one? Do you know someone who breeds them or do you have to search one out special?

Telling genders is supposed to be easy when they are newborns, cause they have no fur.
After the fur grows it's quite hard seeing the genitals, but there are some differences and you can figure it out. Of course it's not 100% sure, but almost.

I looked up some ads.
I am following some Facebook groups dedicated to adoption of rodents, because some people may want to give up theirs for some reason. (Some reasons are better than others, humans are sometimes a bit flimsy.)
But in the end I found a person who had two pregnant gerbils and was looking for new homes for the babies. I'm adopting one of those babies after it's weaned :mccute:

There are some people who breed them because it's nice having little babies at home, and because they are super cute, and because you want to see which fur color you're getting, etc.
Personally I would not want to breed them, but I realize they can be so cute.
