You can keep playing, but after a while all quests will have some area to go to that requires membership or purchase with crowns. I think it'd get boring really quickly if you can only stay in part of the first world. Like you can still level by defeating monsters etc but it's obv much slower and also not that interesting after a while. I first played Wizard101 7-8 years ago, when I had no way of donating anything to anywhere and I think I played it for about a month back then. I reached the part where I'd have to pay to finish quests in certain areas and then I just dropped it with the thought of 'well I did have fun that month, that's enough for me' :)
now I rediscovered it and just got a membership cause it did change a lot in those years and I really like playing it now. I could still lose interest in a month or so and then I'd cancel my membership and not consider the money a loss cause I play it so much right now o;
so it all depends on how you see it and whether you're ok with casually exploring a game or skipping it altogether knowing its eventually pay to play. To each their own ~
As for the raffle, winners have been drawn!
1. Queen's rabbit ears (cool gray) - Sanssouci
2. 50k

- JosieQ
3. 100 Donuts - Lady River
congrats to the winners, and good luck to everyone else in future raffles!

Congrats to the winners! :)
Hm, I'll probably drop it by the time it comes to the having to pay part, since I don't really have enough time to play to justify a regular payment for a membership for me. Maybe I'll consider buying some crowns? But that probably only stretches it a little further if you end up having to buy more and more areas.

Chrizine - exactly! That is also what I am thinking. That I would eventually reach that point where I stopped playing anyway - so why not stop right away or not even start ? :)
But I also see your point, Popodoki :)
Oh amazing prices this week again, congrats!

I've never really checked how many crowns an area costs, I think it also maybe differs per area? Definitely do a bit of research before spending money if you're only going to play it casually yeah ;o
I don't consider myself a gamer at all so personally a game only gets my money if I really enjoy playing it, not if I'm trying it out because friends or other ppl I know are playing it and want me to join. So that's why I don't want anyone else to feel obligated to check it out only to see that they'd need to pay to really get far into it

Oh no no I hope you did not feel criticised by me now!
I totally see your point, I am usually torn in between donating because I really enjoy something at the moment or thinking about the future and pondering on whether it's "fruitful" to donate.

Nah no harm done Julez, I was just thinking that maybe at the time when people were asking me what game I was talking about it might have felt like I was saying 'you should play it too!' when talking about Wizard101. So I explained that it wasn't my intention as like I said I myself don't like to get into games just cause I know someone that likes it c':

I don't personally have any problem with playing a game for a while and then dropping it again, I often do that even with games that don't require any extra payments from me at that point. So I don't mind checking something out even if I know I will most likely stop at some point.

Yeah that's usually how I feel as well. For me its not the 'will I eventually have to pay to play on' thing, its whether or not it appeals to me gameplay wise c':
