I would start off with simple black clothing and as it gets to the fifth stage it becomes a cloak that looks like its swirling around the knuffel with stars at the edges of the cloak. I would also try to make their eyes look like space and give the knuffel dark skin. :3

That is close to what I just imagined and sketched LOL
I only didn't add the stars, but the rest of description fits XD
Sigh, that kinda makes me want to work on my forest spirit girl, but she has to wait a bit more.

lol, 'great minds think alike' as the saying goes. XD When I first suggested it I didn't come up with the idea until after I made the suggestion. XD Can't wait to see the finished knuffel! :D
