Not exactly. It is possible to complete the quests just my lurking in the forums and collecting materials that way, then trading for exactly what you need. People did it that way all the time before the digging system came out. But, knuffels definitely make it easier, and they pay for themselves pretty quickly between the foodpoints they dig up and the foodpoints you get when they level up.
