I don't think it's the principe of 10 pastry for 'x' or 5 sweets for 'y'. You just have to continue giving them the food, and you get items along the way as you go up.

I was on the forums for the hour, because I didn't want to waste it, but would it work if I were, say, feeding my Knuffel?

I found the popups mostly in the shop section.
