The best way to respond to challenges is probably somewhere between his way and your way.
But I could imagine that it is difficult for the two of you to talk about this and really understand each other, since you are very different in this. He might even be intimidated by your ability to pull through and put up with stuff. It might seem so far outside of what seems possible to him, that he has a hard time taking any of your advice to heart in this matter.

Hm, the situation with your mom sounds difficult, I can totally understand why you react to her ways by hiding negative things from her. If you feel you need her advice on this I think it might still be good to talk to her and just not let any of your doubts about why this is happening slip. But otherwise I think you are also justified in not mentioning it.

Yeah, putting an end date on the situation and getting out of it safely seems like a much better reaction than just hiding from it and not doing anything about it.
Let's hope the talk did make him think about what is actually going on!

I'm good, trying to put up with newbies trainings at my new job. The amount of information is overwhelming, but what can you say when you actually got accepted into a corporation xD

I kind of can understand J, but also it seems like he should really start thinking about consequences of his actions. It actually reminds me of my dad in a way... he's had a few normal jobs (I mean ones that actually paid for taxes and everything... oh, dad #embarrassment) but then one tiny thing got him riled up and he yelled at his boss/broke somebody's car window out of anger/got caught having pot, etc. the list really goes on. And whenever he'd talk to me about those things I've never had a good way of telling him he was actually the one in the wrong... But my theory is he just really hated doing those jobs and in the end sabotaged them in a way. Maybe J does something similar, like Chriz and Julez mentioned.
That said, I'm glad you talked with him about it :)
And also, I feel you so hard about the communication trouble... I have no solution, I just really feel you, girl *hugs*
