If they're not your friends you still can't, I believe.
If they are your friends, just click on "friends" below logout and the like buttons to see if someone is online.

just though it was a bug you might want to know about
Shouldn't you hide those extra buttons instead of making them see-through? It's not like there is anyone on ALL THESE messenger programs anyway, and it's missing the more modern ones.
