Yea, they are getting more popular I think, but I'm not sure what it looks like in other countries. I own two right now :) I fell in love with them when my bf's younger sister got 2 females (my older sister used to have 2 as well although hers were kind of mean, they were biting and their fur was coarse and well, not really ... anything, lol). I used to have a single female and she looked very happy despite the fact that everyone's like "rats are social animals and they cannot, cannot under no circumstances live alone!" well, bullshit, Tila was very happy and taken care of, and healthy until she began having female-related issues. We should have sterilized her earlier but we didn't even know there was any risk and didn't think anyone ever performed such surgeries on tiny pets like that. Turns out they do, and it's safer to do it with females anyways. With males it depends, but I've never had males (thought about taking them now, but I fell in love with those two female rascals https://imgur.com/a/sPODq )
I've had all kinds of pets throughout my life. 2 dogs, 2 cats, 2 bunnies, 2 guinea pigs, hamsters.... haha, a whole bunch by now XD And of course fish. My dad really enjoyed having a fish tank and taking care of it.

ahh well i wish i could have furry pets...xD;; but apart from the hamsters, we've never had any. maybe because of upkeep? that and after awhile, my sister got too busy to take care of them sooo....

also, my sister is slightly allergic to fur, like cats, so...xD;;

Hmm, yes, dogs and cats may need a bigger budget XD
There are some breeds that are hypoallergenic (or at least semi-), for dogs it would be breeds that have hair and not fur, so probably breeds like terriers, shih tsu I think, lhasa apso. With bigger dogs, go with bigger terriers XD Maybe there is more, I'm not sure. I can't think of cats besides the sphinx, but I know for sure there are some, I just can't get them from the top of my head ^^;
I'd die if I got an allergy to fur. I've heard and read that kids who are raised with dogs/cats are less likely to develop an allergy to them in the future.

But well, if you are too busy taking care of hamsters, which are very not demanding, then maybe bigger pets aren't a good idea right now Althoguh cats.... are pretty self sufficient once they are bigger than a kitten

welllllll its just a dream of my sister to have a larger fluffy animal...xD;; the hamsters are long gone now though pfffffft...xP but my sister will start sniffling and developing mild rashes when near cats...xD;; iunno about dogs, it seems to mostly just be cats.

also, i constantly update my list and i might not always indicate it. soooooo.......yeah check like every day pfft.

If cats are an issue, she might want to check out dogs XD
