My knowledge basically ends at what is considered "chilling" and what is considered "heating" /D;;

For example, during periods you should try to avoid "cold" foods because it can make cramps worse and induce clotting. Instead "warm" foods like ginger, red sugar, etc are good to make into hot drinks to reduce cramps.

I think at the end of the day it depends on what you grew up with? Some people around me can eat ice cream during their periods and not feel bad at all. But for me eating cold things do make the cramps worse D:

She made it herself. She’s brewed it before and she knows what shes doing and what to put in. So it doesn’t have “weird” stuff in it lol. Unless you think chinese traditional medicine ingredients are weird than yeah its WEIRD. XD

Yeah i know. That’s why she puts some sweeter ingredients like…uh i don’t know what they’re called lol. But what she brewed is 五花茶 ng fa cha (five flower tea). Its a well know leung cha (cooling tea) for heatiness and uses five different flowers. My mom adds a few other ingredients that make it sweet.

My mom has been teaching us all through my life about what foods are considered warm and which ones are cool. Like Natsu said, during periods you should shouldn’t eat or drink too much “cool” stuff. Things like green tea are also considered cooling (try drinking green tea during the summer, it actually goes down “cooler” than heaty teas like black teas). Also, red dates are supposed to be good for after a period, because it helps with replenishing your blood or blood sugar or something?
Anything that uses a lot of “heat” (like fried foods and hot pot) should be countered by drinking or eating “cooling” things. Usually if you eat a lot of hot pot or fried/grilled foods, or even if you’ve been out in the sun a lot, your upper lips feel hot and dry and your eyes also feel like they’re heating up. That’s why my mom, usually after a bbq or something, she would make leung cha (cooling tea) to counter it.

Yessss exactly:DDD

and if you eat too much "heat" foods you can get nosebleeds too. When I was smaller my parents wouldn't let me eat too much chocolate, red dates, and logan fruits because they're too much for kids XD

I'm not sure what causes digestive discomfort though, sugary stuff is always a coin toss, also herbs in general can have an effect on your stomach just because it's having reactions /o/

yeah because they're all "heaty" foods..8U like every single time i eat a piece of chocolate, its like "don't eat so much, its too heaty!" XD same for longan and such.

iunno, i always have a bowl of oatmeal in the morning as well and i'm sure there's like milk powder and stuff in those instant oatmeal packs. maybe, like how milk can't mix with vinegar and such, the herbs reacted with it? i dunno.

By weird stuff I mean things that can actually be harmful. I know that if you don't get things from reputable people then they can put bad things in. Idk what bad things, but I know it does happen.

Like if you don't get medicine from a pharmacy there might be stuff in it that you shouldn't ingest.

I have no contribution to this conversation unfortunately. I just eat food that tastes good.

Stomachs be weird lol

Today mine is acting up too, and I literally only ate bread and porridge :mcargh:

I think there's a slight difference between medicine, herbs, and this whole "eating lore" thing. Obv things can go south if some ingredient is bad/clashes, but herbs are generally safer than pharmacy meds because their effects are subtle. In fact, more often than not they don't actually do anything LOL, it's mostly a long-term habit and cultural thing.

I do know that some herbs should not be eaten if you're taking some medicines. Maybe if you had a doctor that is familiar with herbs as well they could be helpful in making sure you don't take any bad combinations.

If you have gluten issues then that's like the worse things you could eat. lol.

Luckily I don't have any issues with gluten. I'm slightly lactose intolerant and that's about it XD

I think I might have had too much weird oily stuff yesterday and it's spilling over to today lol

That's good. Gluten sensitivity saddens me. It sucks for them a lot. Because they stick that stuff in everything.

I'm also sensitive to oily and greasy food. Makes my stomach upset.

I hope that you feel better soon!

This is all so very interesting!

I would love to learn more about "heat" and "cool" drinks and foods.
Traditions are usually wrong to a certain degree and science tends to - slowly - revoke them, but they are usually based on accumulated observational data which is really valuable - and therefore there is a lot of truth to be find there.

In fact what you said about black/green tea resonates with me so much!
If you asked me which tea I prefer, I would probably say black. I enjoy so much a cup of black tea in the morning, specially when the weather is colder. It's so comforting.
But right now I don't have any black tea at home, since the weather is hotter I started drinking more green tea.
I always do that - and apparently there might be a great reason to!
