• Summary
Mary Astell approaches the subject of marriage from the perspective of both men and women.
• Remarks
o I found Mary Astell’s take on marriage to be incredibly ahead of her time. It was no wonder she wasn’t taken seriously. In 1696 the idea that a woman would voice not only her own opinions but publish them was probably not popular in a time when the only voice was the male voice. You can see this in her argument against marriage; “But this is no fair consequence, for all that can justly be inferred from hence is that a woman has no mighty obligations to the man who makes love to her; she has no reason to be fond
