Yeeeeah it does kinda suck.
Mostly because she was actually my friend. She was a really
nice person, but she was also a biiiiit lazy. And apparently she had quite
an ego but I never knew lol. Here's the story if anyone cares:
Spoiler Soooooo I work at a 3rd party service and parts provider for
analytical science equipment. When I was hired March last year, it was me
and my coworker Liz as the administrative assistant. She took care of the purchasing,
human resources and stuff. I took care of inventory and sales. And we both
were learning about the equipment, repairing them and the parts, etc.
After about 8 months, my boss, this Chinese businessman named Mingyi,
decided that he was going to start a side business as well. So he gave ME
all the work ( purchasing mostly ) that Liz was doing, and I was going to
be the only admin assistant for the initial business. Came with a pay raise
so I was like :DDD OK ~ and Liz went on to work with him on their side
business. Eventually, Liz started showing a bad habit of being late, not really caring
about the work or getting anything done, and she never really applied herself.
I, on the other hand, went on to trying to really learn all the ropes here as the
only employee beside the BOSS lol which puts me pretty high up on the scale.
I guess between the two of us, Mingyi decided that he was tired of her
slack basically, and that he was more worried about her than she was.
He was trying to figure out ways to help keep her from being deported, he always
gave her a break when she was late, mostly because of Wawa . . . lol.
He was always coaching us and trying to get us to do better. I thought she was!
I always regarded her as the better employee because she carried herself
that way and never openly needed or asked for help. But after careful inspection
of her work, which I took over, Mingyi and I discovered a lot of holes in her
work, money missing, items missing, like $15k worth of stuff not recorded.
Not that she stole it or anything, but she didn't care enough to pay attention.
So the company suffered, basically. Which was pretty bad. But then she also
decided to tell our boss that she MAY end up moving to Florida or New York.
She asked for her vacation over the summer basically, but she asked for 4 weeks
instead of the 2 we already get. Then she asked if she could take the laptop
from work and work remotely from where she was . . . so basically she wanted
to still work and get paid WHILE being on vacation, lol. WHY WOULD SHE TELL HIM???
If she could find a better job there she would end up staying, she said.
What in the world made her think it was wise to tell our boss?
She said it was "to avoid blindsiding him when the time came", but basically
you said you already plan on leaving here when you find something better.
That's rude!! Especially since it's been us 3 since the jump. It sucks that she
felt that way. I guess Mingyi thought the same and 2 days later she was fired.
It was so weird, it's been a week since she was fired last Monday lol.
It's pretty lonely. But I got to move my desk, I have more space, I get the
laptop and now I don't really have competition OR distractions.
So I can just work, and work on improving at the job.
Improving is so important right now, because my boss is being deported.
He has to leave before August. He plans on coming back of course, but he
has to do what he's told and go back to China first. He could be gone
2 months, or 2 years. I have to know what's going on at all times
and know all the ropes. It WAS gonna be okay while Liz was here, but now
she's not and I'm due in August. I'm supposed to be on maternity leave
from August to January-ish. So now I have to run this place WITH a newborn lol.
Granted I'll be the only one here, so I can work at my own pace and breastfeed
when necessary, bring the baby here if I want and no one will be disturbed.
I'm a little worried, but when the time comes another pay raise is
coming my way and I could be making like $18 an hour. I would just die.
FINALLY I would be comfortable. I wouldn't have to worry about not
having enough money or the rent or ANYTHING. I aspire to reach that level.
My boss thinks I have the potential. So . . . IMPROVEMENT.
I say as I'm typing on KofK instead of doing inventory. XD
