When that happens to me, I just listen th their tone of voice and depending on what kind of a tone it is respond by either nodding happily, shaking my head, etc. Sometimes though, I just bounce away singing "skipadidoo da, skip a di a, my oh my what a wonderful day!!!!"
Then they forget what they were saying and just work on getting as far away from me as possible. XD
