I once had a teacher explain this to my class, back when I was in middle school, I believe. "Nigger" is an ethnic slur, and was used to refer to Black slaves. Because of this, it's extremely derogatory for non-Blacks to use it; kinda like they think less of Black people (slaves were regarded as objects) or kinda throwing back to those times. I don't know why Black people still refer to each other as this, but I wonder if it's a show of solidarity; a reminder of what they've gone through together as a race.
I hate all ethnic slurs and profanity that's disrespectful to one group or another. Like, I'm fine if people use "god", but not "Jesus Christ". You can see how people might have their own god(s) depending on religion, but JC automatically refers to JC from Christianity.
Many people also don't seem to know that "Jap" is a slur as well. *facehands*
We can try to explain to others why these words are wrong, hateful, and distasteful, but in the end, people will say what they will say. We just have to do our best to make sure that we practice the sort of conduct we believe is right.
