Polish basilisk is a completely different basilisk, it's not a snake. I think it's part rooster, part frog and with snake tail. Or something like that.
But most of the world only knows about the snake one

I knew the basilisk as what you're describing first, Mem. I think we can blame Harry Potter for the other one XD

wait, where do snakes come into it? I thought a basilisk was a bit like a cockatrice.... a rooster lays an egg, a toad hatches it under a full moon, looks like a weird dragonish chicken?
Mortal enemies with weasels?

There's one historian that theorizes that some of the accounts are because of the king cobra. Some myths make it seem absolutely terrifying as well, like being able to kill everything around it, and even if you was to use a weapon against it is not a smart thing to do as the blood is so poisonous you would die from holding the weapon that killed it. I do kind of like the legend that describes it as no more than "twelve finger long". That makes it sound cute.

Okay, I'm officially blaming J.K. Rowling for the serpent thing XD

On Witcher the basilisks look kind of like a lizard bird dragon. They're really strange looking. lol.

But I think most people now a days think this kind of basilisk:
