We adore mushrooms Go mushroom hunting a lot, too, and every once in a while someone will get plugs and have a log of shiitake or oyster mushrooms or stuff like that. But mostly we just get them from farmer's markets and fairs and from the usual spot-foraging ('when you spot one, you forage') when walking around.
It's kind of the essence of savory flavoring, to me: sauteed chopped onions/mushrooms/garlic with a splash of good sake.

Sounds nice. I feel like I would end up dying from a poisonous one if I tried to forage for them. I have terrible luck.

It's not really luck, though -it's being careful. Always check the spores and you'll do well enough. (I mean, if you just eat everything you see of course you will end up poisoned, but you don't do that, so you're good.)

What do you mean by spores? Do you know the kinds that are safe?

I mean that when you try to identify mushrooms, there are some which grow in the same area and look exactly alike and one will be very good to eat and one will be toxic, so you have to pick it, take it home, and put it cap-down on a piece of paper with a bowl over it so nothing knocks it over and wait for a day, and then pick it up and look at the spore print, to see what color the spores are.
And that will enable you to tell the difference between them.
If you just assume it's the right one, then you can run into trouble. But when you check, you are safe.
