Sounds great, Akili!
Indeed, I don't really get the pirate part either, but I guess you are right with your assumptions :)

Hm, what are your constraints? Are you trying to create it just from your wardrobe or would you consider sewing something? I've recently had some diy pirate shirt and pants videos in my youtube feed, if you're interested I could look for them again and link them for you for inspiration?

I'd love to see them! My constraints are more monetary than anything else, so projects I can make are okay.
I never throw clothing away, just move it into "scraps and materials and rags" bins, so there's usually material floating around, and patches all over pirates isn't too out of character, probably!

No problem, here you go!
shirt
pants
Patches and clothing put together oddly from different materials doesn't sound out of character at all, it will probably make the whole look more interesting and polished, actually :D

I remember there was a show on tv here where they proved how religions can become very cultish.

That is not at all surprising... especially ones based on blind faith are scarily open to abuse.
(Okay how much change to the design of something do I have to make if I want to put buttonholes on both sides and then string lacing up through them instead of sewing on buttons? I'll need a flap behind them, right? and put them further apart because they won't be overlapping each other, just the back flap? Am I missing anything else?)

Yeah you might want something behind the lacing to hide any potential gaps
And if you're gonna lace it up, you don't need the openings to be full on buttonholes
I haven't done anything with lacing stuff up but if you find a tutorial it might help

That sounds about right to me, Akili. You don't want them to overlap like for buttons but rather end with a gap or the edges flush against each other. And a flap behind to hide gaps sounds good, too, depending on where the lacing is and if you want skin or other clothes to show through.
