okay, so in metro 2033 & 2034, the people who lived in moscow were forced to retire into the metro tunnels to survive, due to atomic bombing right?
HOWEVER, somewhere in the book there was a statement about rumors about some kind of... village? city? either way, a human settlement, somewhere on the surface.
so a while after metro 2033, it turns out that the radiation isn't as bad as the people thought and it's possible to walk the surface. and so a group of people (inspired by artyom saving the metro, tired of living in the tunnels, desperate people who have nothing to lose - everyone should have their own reason) go out onto the surface and wander the post-apocalyptic russia in search of other people.
