Not that we don't have lousy cops here, this just all sounded very american to me. :}

From some of the stories I've been hearing in the news the police force in this country (USA) is pretty much f****d up. There are still a lot of good cops out there, but there seem to be more and more bad apples.

At least, publicized bad ones

That is the trouble with cops, they have a big "Us against them" mentality. Which I understand, in a dangerous situation you need to be able to count on your colleagues. Poorly this mentality makes them cover for the bad ones among them as well. :}

And that right there is the heart of the problem. You can't have the police self-police. There's too much incentive to let infractions slide instead of reporting them.

Yeah, and when you have a good cop reporting things that person will get Ostracized for being a 'rat'. :}
