I remember making the firm decision to never go into the medical field when I heard how much sleep deprivation was common in that area... it's madness.

Let's see, 10 days from today (unless that was yesterday? No, I think you posted it today) is the 24th of November. Um. I don't know of anything in particular happening that day. Wait is it your KofK anniversary?

It's actually pretty scary when you think about it - these people carry a huge responsibility and we expect them to work under sleep deprivation without making terrible mistakes because they're tired?

Yeah, it doesn't make sense at all. Fortunately it seems mostly confined to the schooling/internships and then big hospitals. Clinics don't seem to have overworked employees, so far.... of course I'm mostly just in the administrative end of things, although I did take the courses to learn how to take histories and vitals.

Hm, but in the big hospitals that's bad enough :(
And I don't think it's the best idea to school people in that way either, they won't absorb all the information when they're super tired...

Either that, or the thinking is that if they can remember it when they're that tired they'll always know it....

one of those!

Hm, okay, but there's still a good chance that there will be something important they'll completely miss because of the tiredness, so...

Yeah, having people well rested seems smarter to me as well. I understand that it would make the education take even LONGER, but that is surely a trade-off which would pay off in the end, through fewer (potentially fatal) mistakes.

Actually I read someplace that if you keep people well rested they take in information better and faster so they learn the same amount in less time. So it would actually be a win-win situation. :}

One would think so, right? But it's probably hard to measure how much impact the tiredness has and how many mistakes it causes, while it's easy to measure how much it costs to make education longer...
