*Confetti rain* for Hunny! :qh:

Nice! That gerbil story reminds me of an native American tale about Jumping Mouse. I bought this book for Ash for xmas, I think, it's a tiny children's book but the story is really nice. A bit morbid in some places, but it's cute :mcargh:

Oh, I looked up jumping mouses pictures and they are sooo cute, to die for!

Is it a traditional story?
Because traditional stories are always a bit morbid. I suppose people were less sensitive back then...

I think the morbid nature of traditional stories makes them more realistic and meaningful.
Personally I prefer the original graphic versions of the fairytales over the Disney versions too :D

Yes, well, the Disney versions often take away parts that were the most meaninful too.
Every mom becomes a step-mom, because, you know, we can't portray a mother as something evil :mcmeh:
But many of these stories in the end talk of the generational struggle, how people must "fight" against their own parents when they grow up into the people they really are.

Or how they turned the seven men of Snow White into dwarfs, for a comical release.
Or the whole end of the Mermaid story, which was so sad but also so good. No girls, don't leave everything you have, don't abandon your friends and family to run after a man who won't even show any sign of commitment.

I knooow! Adorable! :mclove:
It supposedly is traditional. I can't remember which natives it comes from, though. I'd have to ask my ex to look it up in the book, if it's even mentioned there.

I was totally melting yesterday and the day before. But then we got a storm and today is bearable

Disney romanticized the traditional stories and spoiled entire generations... that's not to say I can't quote some of their movies still XD I did love those adaptations.
I've heard somewhere that the morbid parts are there because the stories weren't initially meant for kids at all. But I'm not sure I believe that.

I feel like kids nowadays are being too coddled. If everything slightly controversial is censored, how will anyone learn to develop their sense of right and wrong :mcargh:

Agreed.
But we don't notice that we've been censored already, I mean, it's not just kids nowadays, it's something that's been going on for a loooooong while.
Happy endings are such a new thing, in the past people did not mind tragic stories at all.
Because life is tragic, and it was so much more so in their time.
People were hardened. No tale would scare a kid.

You wanted to eat pork, you'd have to kill it first. How many of us would be ready to kill an animal to eat, huh?
A criminal was caught, he was hung in the main square for all to see - even after he was all rotten. "See what happens if you don't behave."
Children died at so very early ages. Many illness were incurable. Faith was all you had.
No, definetely not gonna get scared by a few tale tragedies.

Now?
We are scared of our own shadow!
