Oh, did the elders not pitch in for the appliances? Or was this before you started to care for them?

I hated using a baby fridge. It suuucked. We are now on our third fridge. The one we are on now is hub's grandparent's old one. Thank goodness for semi wealthy grandparents. lol.

I hear that even if they are out of electricity for a while as long as you don't open it at all they stay cold for a good while.

They do more things like covering some of the utilities and property taxes and such like that, and at the time there was only one of them with me.

Yes, that is true, freezers are of course well insulated so they can stay cold for a while. Especially if they are full (since frozen food is a better thermal sink than air). I don't know if my fear is very logical. I'm not always very good at assessing my emotions like that.

So is it your house that you live in? Or is it like a family house?

Well if it was something super extreme then it would be very bad. Like if the power was out for a week or something. But hopefully you won't ever have to deal with that.

Don't you think they look a little like potatoes?

Yeah!
On the inside they look way different than most fruits I've seen.

Durians?
I've seen them on TV. And the outside of them. I've heard they smell awful so I would not be able to deal with trying them.

If there's a power outage, open the fridge as little as possible
A thing I've read is to fill a small container of water, let it freeze, and then put a quarter on top. If it falls to a power outage to the bottom, everything in the freezer has thawed so in all likelihood it's bad
But that's only really a thing to worry about if you live somewhere that's regular with outages, imo
We get the occasionally, but most tend to be only for a handful of hours, nothing dangerous to the fridge or freezer. Surges, when the power blinks, are the second most common. The one we had that was about 50 hours of outage? Very rare, and when that happens, the outage is extremely widespread
So if all you get is the rare surge, you'll be fine
