The diagnosis is he has been playing roguelikes with no graphics. It makes people go nuts about ASCII like that. And then they go completely bonkers and play Dwarf Fortress, eventually shunning all light and tattooing an @ on themselves.

@mercu Basically it's every aspect of a settlement of a new land done in the most OCD way possible, with every single character aspect and iota of detail put into account. It's also an extreme time and computer power hog because of it, which is why I've only ever gotten to glance at it via play videos and read articles about it. I've heard of sessions lasting years of a player's time.
