He has a very slight white outline around him. Sort of like a blurry aura.

Yeah, they need to be cut out cleanly, so you've got to be careful with getting rid of all remnants of the background. Firn is quite particular about that.
Edit - Other than that, it could be because his cape thingy goes too close to the left margin?

Firn said as long as the base in placed properly that the add ons could go as close to the margins as needed. Its definitely the white pixels around it.

Yes, it's white pixels.
Don't forget knuffel is placed on colorful background later:
and every random flying pixel will be visable. That's why it's good to put your knuffel on bg other then white (I use dark green yay) for a few seconds and check if there aren't any white not needed outlines around or random pixels in his background.
