I'll make up a character (or at least a rough base for them) beforehand, most of the time. But I don't write it down. The details are in my head.
When you're really into writing, the characters write themselves.

I'm doing an Ancient Greece chatplay with my friend currently.
Fun, but a little difficult to keep the facts straight.
I'm alright with bending history/reality for the sake of a good roleplay, though.
