Yeah, there's mythology involved.

I think it's okay to ask for some "details" but not a "character profile" or whatever. Getting an idea about the character and learning their entire personality/backstory/etc are totally different things, and the latter eliminates the need for a roleplay to begin with. And a successful roleplay without character growth is, in my opinion, impossible.

I think the only things neccesary for a roleplay are a general background and an idea of the personality (and maybe basic physical appearance). Background to make sure that the character fits in and personality so that the creator has a sense on how the character acts, so that the character isn't all over the place. Everything else can just be made as the need or chance arises. Of course, this is more of story making experience than it is roleplaying experience ^.^|||

Yes, those are all necessary, but I prefer to think on the higher level of literary awareness; I measure success in writing by the reasons and the meanings that capture the journey towards the final end product.

I am going to bed now, it is rather late.
Goodnight.

I have no idea what that means... P:

Throw-and-go-with-all-the-flexibility-you-want-so-long-as-it-doesn't-make-the-story-fall-apart FTW! It makes for interesting scenes when people try fitting their brain children together without a lot of in-depth discussing with one another! XD
That's why roleplays are more fun than writing a story by yourself sometimes. You have less control over everything, so events don't always fall into a predesignated path that leads to stuff you already know will happen P:
I don't know how this falls into the conversation, but it feels related somehow ^.^|||

Good Night Casey! ^.^

i have no idea what that means either.
i'm sorry though, but i think that not asking the players for info about the character is ridiculous.
i mean i need to know if the character fits in with the rp world. i need to know the backstory of a character to know if it's acceptable. otherwise it would turn into chaos.

I think I know what Casey meant, I kind of thought the same way. Asking for backstory is completely understandable and in many many cases, necessary, but going into lots of detail shouldn't be required. You want to be able to flesh out a character when RPing instead of feeling that you're stuck with something stiff and cardboard-like. The backstory should contain all the important turning points and such of a character's life, but little quirks and details should be left up to the writer when the time comes for it.

I hope that at least makes a little more sense?

I guess that's good. Maybe it was late. ...speaking of which I may have to get off pretty soon for the same reason. XD;
