Both have individual benefits. A manga can spend more time building characters, relationships, and plot points. An anime can streamline a story, removing unnecessary filler or storylines, and focus on the main plot and characters.
Personally, I like both.
I often use an anime to help me decide if I want to invest time into reading the manga.

PupDragon's got it right in one. Well, minus the anime to test the waters in my case. But I like both as well. In addition to what she said, anime is art in motion with sound... So that's always fascinating. And with manga, depending on how fast you read, you can cover a whole arc in the time an anime takes to do one episode. I don't use one to see if I like the series as a whole, but I can say it's amazing reading a manga and then seeing the first anime episode because it's like seeing if those voices you pictured for characters was what the producers thought as well.
