First I want to tell that i may be a bit wrong when it comes to the new and old items... I might put an old item to the new items group accidentaly - so watch out for those mistakes ;)

To grab images as they come up, you right click say "view image". Once they show up in the inventory it seems you can't view them that way.

Yeah - but with those "flash digging" I dont thin you can do that any more....

Ah yes, I know what you mean (I tried that myself) though this is what I do to find some images on the site.
I know if you just take a link that's already in use for materials and change it according to what shows up you can find other materials.
