You said ideas might be welcome - what about a boy one based off the male Australian Lyrebird? Now there's a bird with a striking look, what with that tail, but that hasn't been done and redone like peacocks have.

They make me think of Medusa a bit, with those tailfeathers that look like snakes.
Their color is somewhat... well, not really spectacular, but their tail definitely is xD

We've a lot of cool birds here in Australia - the black swan, cockatoos like the cockatiel, the galah, sulphur-crested cockatoo, Major Mitchell's Cockatoo, the budgerigar, the kookaburra, the rosella, rainbow lorikeet, our own variant of magpie which actually looks different to the other sorts... azure kingfisher... yeah, lots and lots of birds.
If you ever run out of ideas, there's always that list. xD

Oh yeah I know your magpies, they lack the amazing tail ours have ;D
I know a few on your list but indeed, some of them really need more attention :)
Perhaps I should try something else from birds in between, but that really is a useful list.

Heh the Sulphur-Crested Cockatoo has that cute mohawk so that'd be a nice Knuffel element! That Major Mitchell's Cockatoo also have awesome colors to go with it :p

I was doubting between buying a canary and one of those, but budgies need to be trained and I'm afraid I don't have time for that xD

Yup, the budgies live wild here. And look like that, even in the wild. (There are some differences, but plenty of the pet ones look just like the wild ones.)
They're pretty cool birds. And judging by the owners here, they don't seem that difficult to keep, or nowhere near as many people would own them.

It already love watching birds in my garden here, but I can't even imagine how awesome it'd be if I'd see budgies on my fence instead of blackbirds ;D
I know they're not thát difficult to keep, but they need more attention than I can give them... :(
But hey, it just made the choice easier! I seem to be able to keep my canary happy and singing, so that makes me happy too. <3
