Oh, soulmates definitely play into fate, yes. I can see why you don't like it.

I just find the idea of having to grapple with fate interesting... I don't find fate comforting or believe in it irl, but it is a bit like how, in life, there are certain things you will have to make peace with? Limitations and weaknesses. I also like any kind of soulbond where characters change and acknowledge that they didn't originally want what they desire now. It's a strange, bittersweet thing in fiction.

or my favorite things don't really lend themselves to it

I find most of my art on Pixiv or imageboards/boorus
and don't step out into the fandom waters very often

One of my favorite things technically has canon AUs
