Chrizine wrote:Having people who know sign language in early childcare professions sounds like a super good idea :) They might be able to teach the kids more things than the parents who might just be starting to learn the language themselves.
People not wanting to use ASL to communicate with their kids sounds stupid to me -.- just be happy that there is a way that works and not puts all the burden of adapting on the deaf kid.

It must be tough to learn reading without knowing the language first... So it doesn't seem all that surprising that reading levels of deaf-from-birth aren't the best when you think about it, but yeah... sobering is a good word for it.
Especially if you consider that the written word might be considered by somebody with hearing the most natural way to try to communicate with a deaf person if you don't know sign language yourself. At least that's what I would attempt first - just have a little notepad and write instead of talking. I hadn't really considered that reading and writing might be more difficult for a deaf person as well before this discussion.

Once I start my daycare at my home I will definitely incorporate sign language as a means of communication, especially for the younger ones who do not have much vocabulary yet. And I agree, why the heck would someone NOT want their child to learn sign language? It could be so beneficial for so many reasons.

That sounds like a great plan :)
How are your daycare plans going? I remember you said you wanted to open it at some point when you are all settled in the new house, right?

The first philosophies of deaf education fall under the umbrella term of oralism. I think the belief was that deaf students would use sign as a crutch and not learn English or speak.

Because speaking is so important when a person can’t hear. /s

The whole history is riddled with terrible things. It’s easier to understand Deaf suspicion of hearing folks in that light.

They are going well - today I actually sent off all my paperwork to renew my Early Childhood Education license that allows me to practice. Once I get that back I will probably apply to work part time at a daycare near my home while I set mine up. I am still getting the room all fixed to how I want it - I have a few boxes of toys and books to go through and decide which to keep and donate. And we need to sand and stain the wood tables and chairs that I have for the kids. Oh, and fence off part of the yard for a play area. It's going to be really exciting once it is all ready. :mcheh:

Uff, that does sound like a lot of historical baggage, Audriella. I guess people just thought it would be easier to navigate the world of the hearing when one could speak, but failed to notice that it might be more important to actually have a more effective way to communicate.

Nikki, that sounds very exciting indeed! Hope you'll get the license soon and everything goes smoothly :)
How many kids are you planning on taking?

Oh, probably about 4 or 5 kids would be good, I think. Once I'm licensed I could take care of 8 at a time but I think having less would make for a more one on one approach with the kids. :mccute:
