A ripple of beautiful white hair fell over her shoulder. Aivio's eyes reflected the dusk over the landscape as it followed her down the same path she took every morning. The leaves crunching beneath her feet with every step she took, followed by the small sound of metal clanking from her shield, as it brushed against her leg plates.

"Once again it's 6'o clock in the bloody morning and I have to do the same routine after same routine... I mean, I wouldn't mind it but nothing ever happens. The pay isn't even that good, what's a couple of carrots and a slab of meat going to do. I know it's a lot to be complaining when that's all I have but even then, I have to come up with some scraps of rag or something to pay these new comers with doing my dirty work. Once again, I'm not complaining, I'd happily do the dirty work if I didn't want to become captain... It's weird how you have to do less to get more".

She slumped down on a nearby log for her daily patrol. The mile long path was empty as usual, and all that could be heard was the sweet song of birds. She always imagined what they might be saying, laughing to herself as she came up with the scenario of the female bird shouting at the male for not bringing her breakfast. She was always like this, talking to herself and using her mind to create situations that would never happen. She enjoyed her own company but her attitude made her anxious around other people, worried that they might find her peculiar.

"Enough of the sippy talk missy, you're going to be Captain one day and to do that you need to be strong and a good communicator. I mean, I already have one of those covered, so how hard could the other one be..."

[[I updated the character info in my previous post - thank you for all the answers!]]
Melyna was settled against the trunk of a large tree, concentrated on the stitching pattern she was developing for the new skirts she had planned. Occasionally she looked up at the leaves that had been her inspiration for this new style, but mostly she was out here because she enjoyed the quiet next to this rarely used path and she liked to look at the morning sky. She was feeling quite relaxed and secure and let her wings spread out in their natural colouring, mirroring the sky she loved.

If the woman approaching had not been talking, she might have noticed her too late. A little embarassed that she had apparently listened in on some private thoughts accidentally, she hastily changed to her usual public self and stood up using the tree to regain her balance in this larger body. Her heart raced at the thought of being caught orange-winged by a stranger, but she hoped she had been hidden well enough behind her tree to not be noticed.
Slowly she approached the other. Should she pretend she hadn't heard anything? No, that did not seem right. This woman seemed troubled and in need of someone to talk to, and talking to people was Melyna's strongest skill, honed to be her best weapon through decades of practice.
"I am very sorry, but I just overheard you talking. Why do you think you possess only one of these qualities? You appear fairly strong to me and you seem to have no problem with talking either..."

[[I love your characters outfits!]]

"Not a problem, not a problem at all", she motioned, swinging her hands into the air into a small shrug, keeping her eye-line towards the top of the tree that she was perched under. She suddenly stopped speaking, and slowly drifted her head to the direction of the sound. Her cheeks blew up like a peach, she thought the voice she heard was herself talking. Aivio quickly rubbed her head in embarrassment and slowly looked the girl in the eye.
"Haha, sorry about that. I don't realise I'm chatting away until I'm done. It's very nice of you to ask but I don't want to cover you in my troubles, I mean we've only just met..."

Aivio looked at the girl up and down, she seemed friendly enough, and she did ask what's on her mind, but there was something about her, her aura was wise, as if she'd experienced so much. The topic in her mind quickly changed as strangely enough she'd never seen this girl before.
Aivio took a deep breath before speaking... "Once again thank you for asking, long story short I'm trying to become Captain of my division. I've recently took my first steps from a plain, old Mercenary to a quest giver. Hopefully I can help keep civilians such as yourself from danger, but I don't feel that in this moment of time I have what it takes to become a leader".

Aivio continued to stare at the girl, taking in every detail of her face and outfit. "If you don't mind me asking, I've never seen you in town before, are you new? I could offer you a tour or at least point you into a safe direction, this path can be filled with creatures at certain times of the day, I wouldn't want you getting hurt".

[[Thank you :) It was a lot of fun creating them! I did it on this site if you or anyone stumbling upon the thread wants to play around with it as well ;) Took me a while to find a game flexible enough to get everything right.]]

A relieved sigh escaped from Melyna's lips as she realized the confusion of the girl in front of her. Apparently she hadn't been noticed before, so the secret of her wings was safe. Although the way the other looked at her seemed very thorough and going right to the bone. She didn't seem like the kind of person that was easy to fool.
"Well, whether you currently possess all the necessary qualities for leadership or not, you seem determined to achieve your goal, and sometimes that is all it takes. And you are already doing an honourable job for the right reasons, which is more than can be said of some others."
Melyna smiled at the other woman, trying to judge her age. Fairly young in comparison to herself, she was sure, but how young exactly? Had she been stuck in her mercenary job for years or decades? Probably not too many decades at least, most old mercenaries Melyna knew had quite a different view of their job, and this girl had appeared sincere when she spoke about it.

"Oh, but I haven't introduced myself, how rude of me! My name is Melyna. I have indeed recently arrived in this town, but I'm not a total stranger. I have lived here before, although I haven't returned here in many years. I fear I don't know a terrible lot of people in town anymore. I am a dressmaker by occupation and I was out here working on some new ideas."
She glanced unhappily at the sewing material she had scattered while changing bodies too quickly. Her packet of fixing pins had opened, although luckily it looked like only a few had fallen out. Still, it would take some effort to gather everything again.
"What are these creatures you said come to this path? It used to be a very calm place in my youth, perfect for spending a day outside."
She frowned, concern creeping into her voice with the last sentence. She had counted on being able to spend some peaceful days of work under the old oak again. She had always been more productive that way, the interruptions when she worked in her little shop broke her concentration and took away the thoughts roaming free that fueled her creativity.

[[ I looked on the site earlier and couldn't find the one you used, thanks for the link, it's a great way to help visualise! I created a general outfit and an armoured version:
Public | Armour ]]

Aivio quickly scanned her facial expression as she signed, almost to see relief escaping her mouth. Maybe her kind words were meaningful to herself... or perhaps something else. Aivio quickly dismissed the thought.
"I am grateful for your kind words, it's a pleasure to make your acquaintance Melyna, you can call me Aivio. I should of guessed you worked in some sort of tailoring, I have never seen your style of clothing around, but it is simply gorgeous!"
Aivio followed Melyna's eye-line towards the dropped equipment, mainly noticing the pack of opened pins that lay on the ground, and a few other pieces of material that were covered in dirt.
"I'm so sorry, I should of noticed sooner... Thinking about it, I'm certain that there has recently been a new market opening up further along this road leading into town. An old friend of mine runs a textiles department if you would like me to escort you down the road. I haven't spoken to him in a while so he'll probably ask for a favour before giving us the materials, but I'm up for a morning challenge if you wish. Regarding the monsters, it's my job to beat the beasties and keep the civilians safe, so you have nothing to worry about. If you want to know the details, they've only recently started appearing. There's been legends and myths regarding them being summoned by a God. It's a whole lot of shamble if you ask me, but I do find it suspicious that the creatures don't bleed, they just dissipate and turn into dust, maybe they're similar to an immortal some how.

[[She looks gorgeous! Glad you found it useful as well :)]]

"I am glad to have met you, Aivio! You are too kind to me." She gave her new acquaintance a warm smile. "I am happy you like my style. Hopefully you will see it more often in the future, since I have opened up a small shop to sell to the townsfolk." In the last town she lived in, she had been able to live quite well off her clothing. A lot of people had liked it and so for every supply she needed, she had found someone willing to trade it for a piece or two. If the person didn't need it for themselves, the skirts she made had been a popular gift among young women. Now she had to hope that her hometown was as open to pretty dresses as they had been. Melyna wasn't certain that the fit of sentimentality that drove her back had not led her into economically hard times.
"For now I still have some more material that I brought with me when I moved here, but I would be very grateful if you could introduce me to that friend of yours! Eventually I will have to resupply and to know a good textile merchant is the most important thing for someone in my profession." She hesitated, not wanting to take up Aivio's time, seeing that she was probably supposed to guard this path right now.
"Maybe we can go there later, when you are ready to call it a day? I wouldn't want to keep you from your duties." And I wouldn't mind sitting under this tree and stitching some more right now and here in your company. She did not say it out loud, it was not something she would say to someone she barely knew, but she had started to like Aivio and was eager to hear more about her work and maybe the people living in town now. Maybe it was just because she had felt so lonely as she realized how many of the people she had known had moved away or even died. This was the first conversation going beyond a trading deal she had had in days. But it felt very good.
"These beasts sound indeed most curious. Have you had to fight one of them yourself already? If they are truly similar to immortals I imagine they would be formidable enemies!"
And probably something I could only run from and hope for the best. There had been a time when Melyna would have liked a power which was useful in open combat. She would have liked to become a fighter admired by her peers. But at that time, she had also not seen the usefulness of her own power yet, she had not had the acting skills she needed to complement it. And the mental wounds the other children had left on the orange-winged freak had still been fresh.

Aivio nodded and smiled at the woman.
"You will have to show me your shop at some point, hopefully with my upcoming job I'll be able to get quite a bit of inventory to trade with". She kept her smile but she lied, that's one thing she was good at. Her main worry right now was on how to survive with the change in pay of her job.
"As long as you have enough materials for now, then I suppose it's fine. I only have this morning shift for today". Aivio's stood from her perched position and stretched her arms into the air, letting out a huge yawn. Her eyes quickly scimmed her watch and realised an hour had just passed. "Woah, that's gone rather quick, morning shifts are usually the worst. Only two more hours to go!".

As Aivio was just about to answer the question, she suddenly tilted her head as she thought she heard a rumble from above her position, slowly moving her right hand to unsheathe her sword. "Be absolutely still for just one second". Her appearance seemed to instantly change as her eyes filled with tension.
Suddenly, a purple figure leaped from a nearby tree and sprinted directly towards Aivio's legs. She quickly lunged towards her enemy, latching onto her shield and slamming it into the creatures rear, causing the creature's leg to buckle. Her sword followed swiftly; stabbing into the creature's abdominal area. As the now dead foe started to dissipated, she quickly took a small bottle from her pocket and caught some of floating dust, sealing the lid tight.

"Yes! I'm going to dine like a Queen tonight!". She fist pumped the air, her personality immediately going back to her optimistic self, not without noticing the huge smug grin on her face. "About these critters you say? I've fought a few, none any bigger than the one that just tried to get the best of us. Those tend to be the most stupid, the clever ones don't come anywhere near the city, they know better than to mess with me. I could easily take them on but our ranks only get to take care of these buggers". She started flipping the bottle in her hand, catching it in glee. "We fill up the bottles to trade with dust keepers, the bottles are made to stop it from dissipating to the atmosphere... They say they use it to help with farming as it increases the rate of growth. Honestly, creatures don't show up much, which makes the job a little boring at times, but days like these really make it pay off!"

She looked at Melyna and pointed directly at her.
"You're my lucky charm, I mean, that creature could of launched at you instead of me but... you're definitely my lucky charm!" Aivio continued to laugh at herself...

When Aivio suddenly started to tense, Melyna held her breath. Something was going to happen, she could see it in the woman's eyes. She obeyed the command and froze in place, fighting her urge to jump back. She trusted the instincts of the fighter before her that had suddenly replaced the relaxed and happy girl she had been talking to.
The purple creature running towards Aivio was astoundingly fast and Melyna bit her lip to supress her squeal of surprise for fear that it might distract Aivio from the enemy.
It was moving too fast to make out much of what it looked like and after Aivio had made short work of it, dust started to float up from it immediately.
The cheerful girl replaced the fighter again in the blink of an eye, obviously happy with her catch of dust.
After what she had witnessed just know, she understood why it was not a clever idea to mess with Aivio. You didn't want to see that girl change to her fighter self because of you.
Melyna exhaled deeply, the tension falling away and then started to grin as well. "Woah, you are really impressive! I see why the smart creatures wouldn't dare to show up near you."
Her grin disappeared as she thought about the fact that she had been sitting under the oak for a while already before Aivio showed up.
"I'm just glad this thing did not come here before you. I guess I really shouldn't spend time alone out here anymore. I might have to find a new favourite place to work..." She gave a wistful smile to the old oak that had provided her with a place to hide from the world for so many years in the past. It was sad to have returned to it for one day, just to find out it was not safe anymore. She pushed the thought away for now, smiling at Aivio again. She didn't want to spoil the joy that had spread on the other woman's face by emanating melancholy. She would figure something out eventually.
"Thank you! I feel a lot safer knowing that you are out there to protect us from these things. I have no idea what this creature might have done to me without you being here. May I invite you to my home for lunch after your shift is over? I think you have earned yourself some treats."

Aivio's eyes perked up on the mention of lunch, she would never refuse the offer of free food.
"Thank you, the pleasure is all mine, I would love to get to know you better so I'll take up that offer!" she proudly nodded, taking a small bow in front of Melyna, quickly noticing the drop of emotion from her face. Aivio took a curiosity to her acquaintances backstory, she didn't want to pry but she was eager to learn where she originated from, but seeing her face she knew not to ask too many personal questions. Aivio continued to smile to show there was no reason not to trust her.
"I understand it may be a little bit different compared to the last time you came here, did you come to this place often?"

An earnest smile lit up Melyna's face upon hearing Aivio's answer to her invitation. She really looked forward to spending some more time with her.
There was a moment of hesitation when she tried to decide what to answer to that last question. This was a very personal place for her and it might just have shown on her face. She was not going to reveal her power to this woman so fast, but she could probably still explain the significance of this place without elaborating on why she had needed to hide from the other children.
"Yes, it was my favourite place in my childhood already. It used to be a safe spot, not many people were coming here and it was easy to hide in the treetop if standing behind the trunk was not enough. I didn't get along very well with the other children, so sometimes I was very grateful to have this tree where they would not find me."
She hesitated again, but there probably was nothing wrong with revealing her age to Aivio. And she had no idea how long ago this path had turned from a safe hideout into a dangerous place. She wondered if to someone like Aivio, who had maybe never known it in better times, she seemed incredibly foolish for coming here alone.
"That was all a long time ago, of course. I actually came back here in a fit of sentimentality when I realized that I had not seen my hometown in exactly a century."
She smiled a little about herself. The last few days this thought had been very prominent on her mind - it was just a fit of sentimentality that had led her into uncertain times. But maybe it had been for the best. It was not healthy to settle in one place for too long and grow bored of life, which usually happened after a while for her. And now that she had met Aivio, she did not feel so lonely here anymore. She had someone she liked talking to again, the first big step of settling in a new place was done.
