@Rubie: Do you know which Indian languages your friend speaks? I'm curious (as a Indian studies graduate) and there's a ton of them :D
Yeah, I don't think I'd be able to learn all the stuff I don't want to learn. I just want the neccessary skills. I was really mostly frustrated and stressed about the things I didn't want to learn. But now I realize I've also been slacking with the languages themselves
I've learned Japanese up to even B1 level but then I had a huge break and I'm back to basics. And I can't even speak XD Same goes for Hindi, I almost completely forgot it and I'm like @jacob with Korean. I keep learning and recalling the language by apps etc but it's never enough. for example now I'm focusing on Spanish because I have quite some contact with this language at work but there's no time in the day for me to also learn all the languages I want to learn like Japanese, Hindi, Swedish.
I think just apps and practice without speaking and much grammar is not my learning style. I might actually need a teacher.

*is flattered* I need to get to the translation courses then
I will not fail you, senpai
*gets a heart attack*
@Kuuki: That reminds me of how I was learning English! I used to poorly translate songs I liked and I sang along etc. It was so much fun. Maybe I should try doing that with the languages I want to learn (or re-learn). Had this idea for a while but there's always something.
sign languae: I was wondering how big a difference can be between those languages? Is it as big a gap as between any other language, like Russian vs. German or more like Russian vs. Polish or does it depend? I'm clueless about sign languages. the first thought is "they should invent one sign language for all" but then the reality is these people come from different countries, cultures, mentalities so it all translates into sign language.
Idk if anyone is able to answer my questions but thought I'd throw it in here just because XD
@Kit: mechanical translation of languages like Japanese might be super innaccurate because of the kanji signs meanings and readings , it's too complicated for the machine to pick the right context. Hence we end up with horse placentas XD
