XD i mean, in contrast to a lot of modern horror, anyway, it feels fairly quiet to me - there's also a bit of a science fiction vibe, though the author, robert chambers, never really pursues that angle. (i understand that later in life he wrote the late victorian equivalent of harlequin romance novels, which... is a contrast, certainly.
)
but even in comparison to lovecraft, it definitely seems quieter - the driving force of lovecraft's extreme racism and xenophobia doesn't fuel chambers (at least to the same degree - there is still some casual victorian racism in passing
i was rereading today and cringing a little) and his horrors are combined with a weird sort of beauty.
