In science, we learned male peacocks are pretty and females are bland.

My cat stays in the house, so we take her outside for bits at a time.
She spent most of the day outside Sunday, and I know she loved it.
I took her out yesterday, and I walked back inside to do something, and when I came out, she ran to me and there was a squirrel throwing a fit in the tree.
It was so angry, it cussing us out 8,u
I asked her what she did to piss the squirrel off xD
I think she ran up the tree like she does sometimes and the squirrel thought she was trying to get to the baby squirrels.
My sister asked me how I knew it was a female, and I just did.
I think female animals can be scary when it comes to keeping their babies safe.

I remember seeing a large mama bear charging at a man and his dog because they were too close to her cubs.
And the thing is, she WAS giving them a warning.
She didn't just jump them and maul them.
She gave them plenty of warning and they left.

I've had many dogs and cats give birth.
I've had people tell me that the mamas will bite and growl at people who try to touch the babies, but mine never did.
They'd let us check on them and pet them a little.
I understand why they would be a bit aggressive, but none of my animals ever were.
My Saya had puppies and she didn't mind that I groomed them.
She even started mimicking me.
My one cat kept hiding her kittens when we'd check on them >>
She was a meanass, but she didn't act aggressively xD
We checked them because it was her first litter.
We weren't trying to take them 8,u

Female animals seem to get the short end of the stick sometimes, but like humans - mamas can be very interesting and amazing.
And very dangerous xD

Has anyone dealt with or seen mama animals protecting their young?

"I'll miss the winter
A world of fragile things
Look for me in the white forest
Hiding in a hollow tree (come find me)
I know you hear me,
I can taste it in your tears."

I think my childhood lab was the opposite way. My dad bred hunting labrador retrievers. The mom was crazy smart (or maybe just crazy) and could open the combination lock on the gate if no one remembered to turn the dial. Not only would she let us handle newborn puppies without a qualm (lab litters are huge, too, 10-12 puppies that had to be hand fed to supplement her milk) but one day she pulled down on the lock, nosed it off the gate, opened the gate latch and led her 7 week old puppies off the property, across a two lane road and into a patch of woods. (We did find her and all the members of her litter, but still...She liked to run in the woods and thought nothing about her puppies tagging along. If we hadn't noticed right away, I bet we would have found them on the front lawn waiting for dinner later.)

I have seen some protective animal mothers, but they were all wild animals. All the domestic animals I've been around trusted me, I guess.

I have a stupid cousin who didn't take care of her dog very well at all. She was always super skinny and always pregnant. They didn't even try to keep her safe from male dogs.

One day dog had her puppies. She dropped one puppy off per house down the road we lived on. My heart was broken. She knew she couldn't take care of her babies so she tried to give them away to people who could. Of course cousin and her dad picked up all the puppies and two ended up getting beheaded by a fan. And the rest were probably sold.

Ugh.
