Yeah, I could see the appeal of both. One thing I've realized that I struggle with is that I'm a very pop-culture sort of writer. I love throwing in current references and slang, and I'd definitely miss that if I had to work in another timeline.

Well, what I often end up doing is creating new jargon or references to replace it, but it's not the same as having something there that other writers can easily pick up on.

I was wondering, when would the parents realize that their child is a squib?
Like, does a magical parent notice the lack of magic in the child already when it is born? Is it more like the child would be expected to start showing some magical abilities during their childhood and the lack of this is slowly making the parents suspicious? Is there a certain age when it is clearly determined?

Basically, I'm thinking about what expectations a squib would grow up with. Can the parents raise them in the knowledge that they won't be able to do magic or does it come at a surprise (or maybe rather disappointment) at a certain point in a squib's life? Or is it different for different people, maybe depending on the magical abilities of the parents used to figure it out?

I'd imagine that it would be more of the latter, and that signs of magic would be something that develops in early childhood (from around 2-5). There might be specialists (think medical witches, like magical pediatricians) who're better at determining magical development in witch children, but it's still a developing field.

If the kids haven't displayed signs of magic by 7-8, it's unlikely that they ever will.

I think most witch parents would regard "squib" children as being disabled (in their culture, they are). Knowing that there's a community of non-magic folk ("muggles") who are able to live successful lives ignorant of magic and witches, it might be tempting for witch parents to help their children find a life outside of the magical communities, but it really depends on the parents.

Yeah, it's what would make sense to me. I mean, science and the supernatural don't have to be mutually exclusive.

I'm still interested in plotting for this story, however, I'm also getting sidetracked due to "Made in Abyss" (an incredible, fantastical, somewhat dark anime).

It's gotten me inspired to work on Aetheri Verse again, so I'm kinda ping-ponging between the two.
