Yeah, that's a good way to do it.
Or letters. Epistolary novels can be fun, too.

Huh. I gues I always just assume, whenever someone introduces themselves, that they're writing in a diary or telling you their story directly. If it's in past tense especially. Like how old books used to be framed -
I think Wuthering Heights is one of those where there is a framing about someone telling the story of what happened, so you go into the story but it's in that person's words. I never really thought of it being inside their heads in that case.

Or I just see it like stream of consciousness, but I don't really get that voyeuristic sense.

I think I'm cool with any type of perspective so long as it's a solid perspective. Like I was saying with the book I just finished reading, how the shifting perspective between people constantly, paragraph to paragraph, really put me off. I think they call that omniscient perspective or something like that?

Now I think of it, I get thrown off with TV shows and films that do this as well. It's kind of okay when you have a big cast and it's not from any particular perspective, like Game of Thrones. But when you have a central character that narrates and always has their POV, (You comes to mind from Netflix recently), I get super irked when you suddenly go and watch something that happens when that character isn't around. Because how could they know about that happening?

Anyway, I ended up giving that book 4 stars out of 5, so I guess it didn't ruin everything completely :mcheh: but it could definitely have been 5 stars if the perspective shifts didn't happen.

Yeah, I usually picture first person books basically being a diary, even when they are not specifically set up with diary entries.

I'm about a quarter of the way through The Toll-Gate, and it's decent so far.

I think I've read too many actual historical diaries for the diary image to work well for me, because mostly those books do not read like actual diaries at all.

That's interesting, I never regard them as diaries, unless they are intentionally written like one.

I finished Percy Jackson: The titan's curse (book 3). I decided to finish reading HP 2 in Russian next.

Actually, I guess I probably read them more like an autobiography.

I'm almost done with Marriage of Mercy. I'm juggling a bunch of books right now...

It is oddly true that for nonfiction works I don't have any trouble with first person. Autobiographies can be FUN!
In fact, I haven't read any in a while (besides rereads). Any of you have any recommendations in that genre?

I've actually never read an autobiography, but my friend said that Michelle Obama's is great :)

Really? Not even for school? Not even Cellini's autobiography?

I'm not sure that I've ever read one either.
