From The Book of Questions by Gregory Stock.

Question #68: When has your life dramatically changed as a result of some seemingly random external influence? How much do you feel in control of the course of your life?

A world of fragile things
Look for me in the white forest
Hiding in a hollow tree (come find me)
I know you hear me,
I can taste it in your tears."

I feel I am mostly in control.
I think the irony is that most often I get the promise of something good happening externally, which then never happens due to things outside of my own control. Which hurts bad when you lose that thing you were hoping for but never got.

Like when I was at uni, there was this photographer who was going to take me on as a protege to help in his business. We were going to go around the world following a particular sport and shooting all rounds of the championship. It was really exciting. We did one small event together at the end of the season before to prepare.
Then a few weeks before we should have gone, I emailed him to ask about flights and the specific details. He told me he'd decided to focus on another aspect of his business so we wouldn't be going after all. I felt so disappointed. I'd also told so many people about this great new job I had and how I would be flying everywhere so it was painful to have to admit it wasn't happening.
Later on I found out from other people in the same industry that this guy was basically a con artist. He would take other peoples' photos and pass them off as his own, and sell them. I think he would likely have used my stuff as his own too. But I actually almost would have been fine with that in exchange for the travel and experience as I was at such an early stage of my career then.

there have been other examples too, but this one came to mind very sharply.
