Hmm, let's see... work on getting the affection of at least one of your pets up everyday, one of the later quests requires a pet with 150 affection! Also there are many quests that require you to have a lot of one stat, which you can achieve by equipping a lot of clothes that add to that stat - wardrobe drawer expansions help with that. 8)
Pets and items can be alchemised and there are recipes for both, random alchemy has its own pools of items and pets too. Most item recipes involve combining 5 of the same item from NPC gacha (for example 5 common or 5 uncommon Bearnard hats give you 1 rare Bearnard hat) or specific combinations of conecakes or shells. There are also items you get in adventuring and combining one of each colour + a mixer potion results in a rainbow version of that item.
At a later point in game you will be required to alchemise a specific fantastical pet (either Glass Orb Fox or Sunise Celestial, depending on the NPC you choose). It might be good to work on getting the ingredient pets before you get to that point, so you don't get blocked for too long. But do not alchemise that pet until you're asked to do so, if you make it too early the quest won't count.
