I actually...saw a kitten get ran over once.
It was horrible and it died alone.
I could never run over an animal and just keep going.
I would check on it and if it had a tag, contact the owners.

I have a lot of cats I care for and it scares me thinking of them getting ran over.

Yes and yes. It would be wrong and just a dick move to drive away without checking, and if you killed someones dog you have an obligation to let them know. I certainly wish the driver who killed my dog six years ago had stopped. Or even slowed down.

How do I know it is safe? I don't.

And I hate to say this, but around here I wouldn't. Most people let their dogs run wild and they know what will happen because of that. But, if it was a different place where people took care of their animals and all, I would.

Most of the dogs running around at night I've met so far were aggressive and me being dead afraid of dogs makes me not want to go near one ever, especially when I never met it and there is a chance it can attack me. I would most likely stop and either phone for help from police/local animal patrol or contact a friend or someone and ask for help. I would not leave it on the road, but I would not go out of the car until someone else is next to me either. would totally call the owner if the dog would not make it though.

I would probably panic and run away

I would have to stop and check on the dog. I would contact the owner and tell them what happened even though it would be a very hard and painful thing to do. They deserve to know what happened.

And maybe with their next dog they won't let him wander into the street.

Of course I would! They deserve to know what's happened to their dog.
But I'd need some time to process it myself because if I ever ran over an animal I expect I'd be a total wreck

Yes (cautiously) and yes (they definitely should know about it)

i would definitely stop and tell the owners if the dog was dead. i lost my cat who didn't have a collar or ID and i often wonder if i'd have ever seen her again if i'd been able to get her an ID collar or a chip (no money). so... yeah.

Where I live it's illegal to leave if you've run over a bigger animal. Of course I would stop, and probably have so much regret, but calling is the only option.
